Dental X-ray

Dental X-ray

Modern diagnostics for the health of your teeth. Dental X-rays, also known as dental radiographs, are an indispensable part of modern stomatological diagnostics. They allow us to obtain accurate and detailed images of the teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures, enabling us to quickly detect problems that would remain hidden during a routine examination. X-ray images are crucial in planning treatments for cavities, extractions, implants, fixed prosthetics, but also during regular preventative check-ups.

Indications and Contraindications for Dental X-ray Examination

Indications and Contraindications for Dental X-ray Examination

X-rays are an integral part of modern dentistry. They provide an invisible view beneath the surface of the teeth and gums, enabling accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning. Below, you’ll find an overview of situations where X-ray examination is appropriate, and when caution or postponement may be advisable.

Indications (When is an X-ray Examination Recommended?)

      1. Diagnosis of Tooth Decay

Especially for detecting hidden interdental caries, caries under old fillings, and caries in hard-to-reach areas.

      2. Inflammation and Infections

To diagnose inflammation around the roots of teeth (periapical inflammation), cysts, abscesses or bone inflammation.

      3. Tooth Pain or Sensitivity

To determine the cause of unexplained pain or increased tooth sensitivity.

      4. Periodontal Diagnosis

To assess bone loss in patients with periodontitis and evaluate the depth of periodontal pockets.

      5. Planning Dental Procedures

Before root canal treatment (endodontics), tooth extraction, dental implant placement, orthodontic treatment, or prosthetic replacement (crowns, bridges).

      6. Post-Treatment Check-ups

After root canal treatment, extraction, implant placement or other surgical procedures to check the result and healing.

      7. Assessment of Tooth Development

In children and adolescents for monitoring the eruption of permanent teeth, root development and detection of anomalies.

      8. Trauma to Teeth and Jaws

To diagnose fractures of teeth, roots or jaw bones.

      9. Evaluation of Cysts and Tumors

To detect pathological formations in the jaw and their extent.

Contraindications (When Should Caution be Exercised?)

      1. Acute Infections and Inflammation

Uncontrolled acute infections in the oral cavity (e.g., extensive abscess) or systemic infection of the body (e.g., flu with fever).

      2. Uncontrolled Systemic Diseases

Severe uncontrolled diabetes, unstable heart disease (e.g., recent myocardial infarction, untreated hypertension) or serious blood clotting disorders.

      3. Pregnancy (relative)

Certain procedures (especially X-rays, invasive surgeries) are recommended to be postponed until the second trimester or after delivery, unless it is an acute condition.

      4. Allergies

Known allergies to local anesthetics, medications or materials (metals, resins) used in dental treatment.

      5. Taking Certain Medications

Anticoagulants (blood-thinning medications), immunosuppressants, bisphosphonates, corticosteroids – require consultation and possible adjustments to treatment.

Important Note: Dental X-ray examinations are always performed with maximum consideration for safety and minimal radiation exposure. Modern digital X-rays and precise beam targeting minimize exposure to only the necessary area. This list is general and indicative. Each case is individual, and the need for an X-ray image is always decided by a dentist based on clinical examination and your medical history. It is always crucial to inform your dentist of your complete medical history and current health status, including any pregnancy, so they can choose the safest and most effective approach.
