Indications and Contraindications for Preventative Dental Check-ups

Indications and Contraindications for Preventative Dental Check-ups

Regular preventative check-ups are the foundation for the long-term health of your smile. Here you will find an overview of when a check-up is always recommended and when it may be advisable to postpone it.

Indications (When is a check-up recommended?)

          1. Regular Yearly Check-up

Recommended for all patients over the age of 18, at least once a year (ideally twice a year, covered by health insurance).

          2. Children and Adolescents

From the eruption of the first tooth (around 6 months of age) until the age of 18, two preventative check-ups per year are recommended, covered by health insurance.

          3. Without Any Issues

Even if you are not experiencing any pain or problems, it is important to detect early signs of decay or inflammation that may not be visible to the naked eye.

          4. Changes in Overall Health

If there have been significant changes in your overall health (e.g., new diagnosis, medication change), it is advisable to consult about their potential impact on your oral health.

          5. Dental Hygienist’s Recommendations

Following dental hygiene treatment, for a comprehensive assessment of your condition and recommendations for further steps by the dentist.

Contraindications (When should a check-up be postponed?)

          1. Acute Systemic Infections

Febrile illnesses (flu, sore throat), severe cold, cough, or other acute viral/bacterial infections that could pose a risk to both you and our staff.

          2. Acute Oral Inflammation

Extensive acute inflammation in the oral cavity (e.g., significant gum swelling, severe pain) – in such cases, urgent dental care is needed rather than a preventative check-up.

          3. Immediately After Surgery in the Oral Cavity

If you have recently undergone oral surgery (e.g., tooth extraction), it is advisable to allow the tissues time to heal.

          4. Severe Uncontrolled Systemic Diseases

Extremely unstable condition due to serious chronic illnesses (e.g., very high blood pressure, uncontrolled diabetes with high blood sugar levels) – it is necessary to stabilize your overall health first.

          5. Severe Dental Phobia / Anxiety

In cases of extreme anxiety, a special approach may be needed (e.g., sedation), which is not a standard part of a preventative check-up. It’s best to discuss this with your dentist beforehand.

Important Note: This information is intended as a general guide and does not replace a personal consultation with your dentist. Always inform your dental professional about your complete current health status to ensure safe and appropriate care. If you’re unsure whether a preventive check-up is right for you, please don’t hesitate to contact us — we’re here to help.

          Preventive check-up FAQ

On this page, you’ll find answers to the most frequently asked questions from our patients. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, feel free to reach out — our team is always happy to help.

          Do You Accept New Patients?

Yes. Our dental practice welcomes adults, children, and pregnant women. During your first visit, we will perform a comprehensive examination and plan the next steps. We cooperate with all health insurance companies.

Is a Dental Hygiene Appointment Required Before My First Visit?

It is not required, but recommended. Dental hygiene helps to better assess the condition of your hard and soft oral tissues and prevents cavities, gingivitis, and periodontitis.

What If I’m Afraid of the Dentist?

Schedule an initial consultation. Our dentist will explain everything to you, show the procedure, and alleviate unnecessary anxiety with painless treatment using anesthesia.

When Should My Child Have the First Dental Check-Up?

Immediately after the eruption of the first tooth, but no later than around one year of age. Early visits help prevent early childhood caries (cavities), improper tooth development, and complications caused by decay.

How Often Should I Schedule a Preventative Check-Up?

At least once a year, ideally twice a year, especially if you have an increased risk of tooth decay, already have fillings, or have undergone endodontic treatment (root canal) or orthodontic treatment.
