How Does Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics) Work?

How Does Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics) Work?

Root canal treatment is a precise procedure aimed at saving a tooth affected by inflammation or infection of the dental pulp (“nerve”). Thanks to modern technologies and the experience of our dentists, the treatment is usually painless and has a high success rate. The entire process can be divided into several key phases.

Thanks to modern technologies and the experience of our dentists, the treatment is usually painless and has a high success rate. The entire process can be divided into several key phases.

Phase 1: Diagnosis and Preparation

Důkladná diagnostika

Pomocí digitálního rentgenu (RVG) a v komplikovaných případech i 3D CBCT snímků přesně určíme rozsah zánětu, počet a tvar kořenových kanálků.

To chrání zub před kontaminací slinami a bakteriemi a zároveň brání vniknutí dezinfekčních roztoků do vašich úst.
Phase 2: Cleaning and Filling of Root Canals

Creating Access

A small opening is created in the crown of the tooth to gain access to the pulp chamber and root canal openings.

Cleaning and Shaping the Canals

Using an operating microscope, which provides multiple magnifications, and special flexible nickel-titanium instruments (rotary endodontics), we carefully remove infected pulp and bacteria. The canals are then shaped to an optimal form for subsequent filling. During this step, the canals are repeatedly rinsed with disinfecting solutions to ensure maximum cleanliness.

Measuring Canal Length

Using an electronic device called an apex locator, we accurately determine the precise working length of each canal with high precision. This is crucial for perfect filling to the root tip.

Filling the Canals

Once the canals are perfectly clean and dry, they are hermetically sealed. The most modern and proven method is filling with heated gutta-percha (thermoplastic obturation), which completely fills the entire complex root canal system, including its small lateral branches.
Phase 3: Final Tooth Reconstruction (Post-Endodontic Treatment)

Temporary Filling

After filling the canals, the access opening is sealed with a temporary or definitive filling.

Definitive Treatment

A tooth after endodontic treatment is more fragile and prone to fracture. Therefore, it is essential to provide it with a definitive restoration as soon as possible to protect it. Depending on the extent of tooth damage, this usually involves a ceramic onlay or crown. This step is just as important as the root canal treatment itself for the long-term survival of the tooth.
