We use implants as a solid foundation for fixed prostheses – a solution that not only restores full functionality of the teeth but also improves the appearance of the entire smile. In cases where implantation is not possible, we offer bridges and removable dentures with an emphasis on maximum comfort.

Indications and Contraindications for Dental Prosthetics

Indications and Contraindications for Dental Prosthetics

Dental prosthetics is a field focused on replacing missing teeth or reconstructing damaged dental tissues. The goal is to restore full functionality of the dentition, correct bite alignment, improve the aesthetics of your smile and ensure proper pronunciation (phonetics). While prosthetic solutions offer numerous benefits, there are situations where their creation is particularly advisable, and others where caution is needed or treatment should be postponed.

Indications (When is Prosthetic Treatment Advisable?)

          1. Loss of One or More Teeth

Replacing missing teeth with a bridge, an implant with a crown, or a removable denture.

          2. Rozsáhlé poškození zubu

If a tooth is damaged by decay, trauma, or wear to the extent that it cannot be reliably and long-term repaired with a filling, a crown is indicated.

          3. Ošetření zubu po endodoncii (ošetření kořenových kanálků)

A “dead” tooth is more brittle and prone to fracture. A crown protects it from breaking.

          4. Estetické nedostatky

Modifying the shape, color, or position of teeth using crowns or veneers to achieve an aesthetically optimal result.

          5. Abnormální opotřebení zubů (abraze, eroze)

Reconstruction of the dentition in cases of bite loss caused by excessive tooth wear.

          6. Obnova žvýkací funkce a správného skusu

Ensuring proper distribution of chewing forces and preventing overload on the remaining teeth.

          7. Prevence posunu zubů

Replacing a missing tooth prevents shifting and tilting of adjacent and opposing teeth into the space.

          8. Stabilizace snímatelných náhrad

Using crowns on remaining teeth for better retention and stability of partial removable dentures.

          Contraindications (When is Caution Needed?)

          1. Active Periodontitis and Gingivitis

Before any restoration is made, it is absolutely necessary to treat and stabilize the inflammation of the gums and tooth supporting structures. Prosthetic work on diseased abutments is doomed to failure.

          2. Insufficient Oral Hygiene

Patients who are unable or unwilling to maintain perfect oral hygiene are at risk. Bacteria can accumulate under crowns and bridges, leading to decay or inflammation.

          3. Untreated Dental Caries and Inflammation in the Oral Cavity

Before starting prosthetic treatment, the oral cavity must be completely sanitized (free of cavities and acute inflammation).

          4. Insufficient Remaining Tooth Structure

If there is not enough healthy tooth structure remaining after removing decay and old fillings to support a crown, it may be necessary to build up the tooth first or, in the worst case, extract it.

          5. Untreated Bruxism (Teeth Grinding and Clenching)

Extreme forces during bruxism can damage or destroy prosthetic work (e.g., ceramic fracture). It is necessary to address the bruxism, for example with a night guard.

          6. Acute Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders

Before creating extensive prosthetic work, it is necessary to first stabilize and treat any acute problems with the temporomandibular joints.

          7. Incomplete Jaw Growth

In children and adolescents, it is necessary to wait until the jaw growth is complete before placing definitive fixed restorations to avoid disrupting development.

          8. Unrealistic Patient Expectations

If the patient has aesthetic or functional expectations that are not technically or biologically achievable in the given clinical situation.

Důležité upozornění: Tento seznam je obecný a orientační. Každý případ je unikátní a vyžaduje pečlivé individuální zhodnocení zubním lékařem na základě komplexního vyšetření, rentgenových snímků a případně i studijních modelů. Mnoho z relativních kontraindikací lze úspěšně vyřešit vhodnou přípravou a léčbou. Vždy je klíčové sdělit Vašemu stomatologovi celou svou anamnézu a aktuální zdravotní stav, aby mohl zvolit ten nejbezpečnější a nejúčinnější plán léčby.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Prosthetics

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Prosthetics

What is the difference between fixed and removable dental prosthetics?

Fixed prosthetics, such as crowns, bridges and implants, are permanently fixed in the mouth and cannot be removed. Removable dentures can be taken out of the mouth, which may be a suitable solution for a larger extent of missing teeth.

How long does it take to make a dental prosthetic?

The manufacturing time varies depending on the type of prosthetic and the extent of treatment, but it usually takes between 2 to 6 weeks. During this time you can use temporary prosthetics.

Can a crown or bridge be placed on implants?

Yes, implants serve as a solid foundation for fixed crowns and bridges that replace missing teeth and restore full functionality and aesthetics.

What is the care for dental prosthetics?

Regular oral hygiene and dental visits are essential for the longevity of prosthetics. In our clinics we also offer preventive and dental treatments that help keep your prosthetics in perfect condition.
